Men’s hockey sweeps Kings to capture ACAC championship
After a thrilling 7-6 win in Red Deer and a 5-4 win in Calgary last weekend, the SAIT Trojans men’s hockey team had a chance to capture the ACAC championship with a win on Friday.
The Trojans and the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings met for Game 3 of a best-of-five series on Friday, March 20, in Red Deer.
Before the game, several Trojans players were honoured with awards.
Zach Cain and Cory King were named to the Trojans all-conference first team, while Owen Underhill and Andrew Maclean were named to the second team.
Underhill was also named ACAC rookie of the year.
Three Trojans were also named ACAC academic all-Canadians: Maclean, King and Cain, who was also awarded top scholastic honours.
In the game, Ryan Neumann opened the scoring 12 minutes into the first period to put the Trojans up 1-0.
With no other scoring in the first period, Austin Reschny made it 2-0 early in the second period.
Trojans rookie Tate Schofer clinched the championship with an empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining.
With the win, the Trojans captured the ACAC championship with a 3-0 series sweep over the Kings.
Women’s futsal wins bronze at ACAC championships
After a successful regular season that saw the Trojans women’s futsal team finish atop the standings with a 7-1-0 record, they looked to bring a banner home to Calgary.
Hosted by Medicine Hat College in Medicine Hat, Alta., the ACAC women’s futsal championship took place from Friday, March 20, to Sunday, March 22.
Before the games got underway, Trojans fifth-year veteran and Canada national team futsal trialist Nikki Charlton was named to the all-conference South team.
The Trojans took on the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks in their first game on Friday afternoon.
Meagan Wiebe opened the scoring for the Calgary side late in the first half as the Trojans took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Isabel Vega and Charlton both added goals early in the second half to secure a 3-0 win, advancing the Trojans to the semifinal.
In the semifinal on Saturday, the Trojans faced provincial rivals NAIT Ooks for a chance to advance to the championship match.
After a tight first half, Ooks forward Alise Rahime scored two minutes before halftime to give the Edmonton side a 1-0 lead.
Rahime doubled the lead three minutes into the second half, sealing the win for the Ooks.
With the loss, the Trojans faced the Lakeland College Rustlers on Sunday morning.
Sofia Sproule and Charlton both scored in the first half to put the Trojans up 2-0.
The Trojans came out firing in the second half, scoring three goals in six minutes from Gabby Cavezza, Vega and Sproule.
Allyssa Haidel added a pair of late goals for the Rustlers to make it 5-2, but Cavezza responded with her second of the game to secure a 6-2 win.
With the win, the Trojans advanced to face the host Medicine Hat College Rattlers for bronze.
Just one minute into the match, Sproule opened the scoring.
Alexis Ratke equalized for the Rattlers seven minutes later.
The Trojans added three more goals before halftime — from Wiebe, Vega and defender Natalie Girvitz — to take a 4-1 lead into the break.
Vega and Sproule each added their second goals midway through the second half, and Amy Fallows scored late to give the Trojans a 7-1 victory and the ACAC bronze medal.
Charlton was named the Trojans player of the tournament, capping off a successful weekend.
Trojans esports climb the standings
The SAIT Overwatch varsity team defeated PFW Mastodons Overwatch Varsity Plus 3-0 on Monday, March 23.
The win improved their record to 5-3.
Also on Monday, the SAIT Overwatch academy team lost 3-0 to Keiser University, falling to 4-4 on the season.
The SAIT varsity League of Legends team lost 2-0 to the University of Texas at Dallas, moving to 1-1 and sitting third in the standings.
Also in action Tuesday, the SAIT academy team faces MACU LoL at 7:45 p.m.
In Rocket League, the SAIT varsity team lost 3-1 on Tuesday, March 17. They will face PPU Rocket League Gold on Tuesday, March 24, at 8:30 p.m.
The SAIT Valorant varsity team lost 2-1 to CSU Vikes Academy on Wednesday, March 18, bringing their record to 5-4. Their next match is Wednesday, March 25, against UNCG Stella at 7:45 p.m.
The SAIT Valorant academy team also lost 2-0 to the Durham Lords on Wednesday.
Next up, the academy team faces NKU Varsity on Wednesday, March 25, at 8:30 p.m.
